Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of the field

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

Everton: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
