European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
