Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element holding it together to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he admitted that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.

He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Finding His True Position

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
